Exonians at Canadian Henley

Nine Exonians will compete at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta this week. In its 125th year, the regatta will take place from August 7th to August 12th on Martindale Pond in St. Catharines, Ontario. Among the field of hundreds of competitors, eight rowers and one coxswain from the Exeter community will take part in the racing.

  • Allison Courtin ’08 will race in the Women’s Junior Coxed Four and Women’s Junior Eight for West Side Rowing Club of Buffalo, New York. Her first heat in the four is Tuesday at 10:27 AM in lane 3, and in the eight on Thursday at 12:12 PM in lane 2.
  • Katie Courtin ’09 will cox the Women’s Junior B Eight for West Side Rowing Club as well. Her first heat is Tuesday at 6:23 PM in lane 7.
  • Chris Courtin ’06 will race in the Men’s Senior B Coxless Pair and the Men’s Senior B Eight for West Side Rowing Club. His first heat in the eight is Wednesday at 2:58 PM in lane 3, and in the coxless pair on Thursday at 11:51 AM in lane 6.
  • Boys co-captain Tim Moore ’08 will race in the Men’s Junior Coxless Pair and Men’s Junior Eight for Boston Rowing Club. His first heat for the eight is Thursday at 9:03 AM in lane 2, and in the pair on Friday at 11:00 AM in lane 1.
  • Vaughan Coder ’08 and Andrew Safir ’08 will race together in the Men’s Junior Double Sculls for Durham Boat Club of Durham, New Hampshire. Their first heat is on Wednesday at 9:50 AM in lane 3.
  • Luke Thoms ’08 will race in the Men’s Senior B Quadruple Sculls for Quad City Rowing Association of Moline, Illinois. His first heat is Thursday at 8:28 AM in lane 4.
  • Madison Gilmore ’08 and Laura Pond ’08 will race in the Women’s Junior Coxed Four, Women’s Junior Eight, and the Women’s Senior B Eight for Community Rowing of Watertown, Massachusetts. Their first heat for the four is Tuesday at 10:13 AM in lane 5, in the Senior B Eight on Wednesday at 11:00 AM in lane 6, and in the Junior Eight on Thursday at 12:26 PM in lane 1.

Olympic Hopefuls and Club Nationals

Two Exeter alumni are hoping to earn a spot on the US Olympic Rowing team for the 2008 Olympics next summer in Beijing.

  • Sloan DuRoss (Exeter ’95 and Brown ’99) represented the United States in the quadruple sculls event at the latest World Cup Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland. His crew finished 10th overall.
  • Deaglan McEachern (Exeter ’01 and University of California-Berkeley ’05) represented the United States in the quadruple sculls event at the 2007 Pan American games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. His crew finished third, winning a bronze medal.

A number of Exeter rowers competed at the USRowing Club Nationals on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey between July 18 and 21.

  • Jeremy Bernstein ’07 won a gold medal in the bow seat of the Junior Mens Selection Camp Men’s Intermediate A Coxed Four.
  • Boys co-captain Ian Winthrop ’08 won a gold medal in the 3 seat of the Junior Mens Selection Camp Men’s Intermediate A Eight.
  • Boys co-captain Tim Moore ’08 won a silver medal in the 2 seat of Boston Rowing Club’s Men’s Junior A Eight.
  • Allison Courtin ’08 won a bronze medal stroking West Side Rowing Club’s Women’s Junior A Eight.
  • Luke Thoms ’08 rowed in the Men’s Junior A Single Sculls, the Men’s Junior A Double Sculls, and the Men’s Intermediate A Quadruple Sculls for the Quad City Rowing Assocation.
  • Lynn Ann Forrester ’08 rowed in the Women’s Junior A Eight, the Women’s Junior A Coxed Four, and the Women’s Junior A Single Sculls for the Saugatuck Rowing Club.
  • Charlotte Taft ’01 rowed in the Women’s Intermediate A Quadruple Sculls, the Women’s Intermediate A Eight, and the Women’s Senior A Eight for the New York Athletic Club.


PEA Rowers selected for National Team

Editor’s Note: I apologize for the lack of recent updates, I’ve been abroad and unable to post any news stories.

USRowing has announced the final roster for the Junior National Team, including two Exonians. Jeremy Bernstein ’07 (left) in the Junior Mens Coxed Four and Ian Winthrop ’08 (right) in the Junior Mens Eight. Jeremy and Ian, who rowed five and six seat respectively on the boy’s first boat this year, will travel to Beijing, China, for the 2007 FISA World Rowing Junior Championship from August 8-11. The venue, the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park, will also host the Rowing, Canoing and Kayaking events at the 2008 Summer Olympics next August. Congratulations and best of luck to Ian and Jeremy.
